Less than a year before I started this blog, my best friend Jess and I took a girls’ weekend trip to Savannah, Georgia. I have been meaning to post about our trip since then, but am finally getting to it now! It was such a fun weekend that I couldn’t just skip telling you about it. Better late than never, right? Also, I’ll be going to Savannah for a bachelorette party in about five months, so I had to get all the details from my first Savannah trip posted before I go on the next one!

Savannah is a beautiful Southern city filled with streets lined with ancient oaks covered in Spanish moss. There are charming squares where you might find someone reading a book, a couple taking wedding photos, or puppies playing. With several art galleries and the Savannah College of Art and Design located right in the city’s center, the city has so much artsy character. We walked pretty much everywhere (except when we took a rickshaw because we were in heels) and had fantastic food throughout the weekend. Before our trip, I had gotten a ton of recommendations from friends who live in Savannah and others who had visited. We didn’t have time to see it all, but we came up with an impressive list of recommendations to share with you!

Where to Stay:

There are plenty of hotels in the area, but I highly recommend finding a house on airbnb or vrbo. There are so many charming homes in the area that are rented out as vacation properties. We found a great little suite in the bottom of historic Brockington Hall a block and a half from Forsyth Park. We stayed in the Inn Suite which had a living room and kitchen and was the perfect size for our two night stay. Link to book the Inn Suite on VRBO here.

Brockington Hall was built in 1882 and is available for rent for special events. The owners were kind enough to give us a tour of the space during our stay and we were awestruck by the beauty!

Where to Eat:

• Brunch at Vic’s on the River: Vic’s on the River is the perfect place to get brunch or lunch =so you can enjoy a great view of the river while eating delicious food. What to order: Award-winning crawfish beignets (I don’t even like crawfish and I loved these)
• Lunch at Zunzi’s: At the time of our trip, Zunzi’s was the #1 restaurant on TripAdvisor (at the time of this writing, it is #5). Zunzi’s serves takeout-only South African food and lives up to its fantastic reputation. Make sure to check the hours before you go as it closes between 5:30 and 6, and is closed on Sunday. We ordered food and sat in a nearby graveyard while we enjoyed our lunch

  

  

• Dinner at PJ’s Thai: For a quick, delicious dinner, pick up PJ’s Thai and enjoy it at a table outside surrounded by the beautiful homes in the neighborhood.
• Late night pizza at Sweet Melissa’s: After a late night at Congress Street Social Club or Rocks on the River, this is a great place to get late night pizza (it is open until 4am). Another local favorite pizza joint is Vinnie Van Go Gos.

What to Do:

• Walk or jog around the city: I arrived on a Friday afternoon and my friend Jess wasn’t going to meet me until after dinner so I took the opportunity to map a course through Forsyth Park, downtown Savannah, and down by the Savannah River. One of my favorite ways to start a trip in a new city is with a run through the city. This way, I get a sense of direction and get to do some sightseeing and people-watching.

  

• Hit the Forsyth Park Farmers Market on a Saturday morning: This is a great place to enjoy a morning outside with the locals. It’s also the perfect way to grab a healthy breakfast

  

• Shop on Broughton Street: Make sure to spend some time on Broughton Street where you’ll find boutiques, art galleries, the revived Lucas Theatre, and the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream. On Broughton Street, you’ll be able to find something beautiful and unique to take home from your travels.
• Walk down River Street: You can see the beautiful buildings, visit a gallery or boutique, or even take a ride on the Savannah Riverboat. Check the events page of the website to see if there are any festivals during your visit or enjoy fireworks on the first Friday of every month.

  

  

  

• Take a haunted graveyard tour: Although we didn’t actually take a haunted graveyard tour during our visit, it is something that most people do when they go to Savannah. We did walk through some of the historic cemeteries filled with graves that are hundreds of years old.
• Crash a wedding: True story, we did this. On our first night in Savannah at Congress Street Social Club, Jess and I were talking about crashing a wedding. Not even a few minutes later, a group of guys started talking to us and mentioned that they were in town for a wedding and that we should come. Of course, we couldn’t turn them down and hit the wedding reception on Saturday night. It was such a fun night and a story that we will never forget, especially when one of the groomsmen mentioned “the girls who crashed the wedding” in his speech…  Thanks Bridget and Julian for having us at your wedding!
